Description
km (775 m). Right in front of the gîte d’étape, continue along the street leading to the track that climbs towards the castle and follow it north-west.
.6 km (832 m), 10 min. Castle junction. After passing a viewpoint overlooking the entire valley, with a panoramic information panel, you will reach the path leading up to the castle. If you have enough time, it is well worth the climb, as the views from the top are magnificent (the ascent takes about 10 minutes). To continue the route, follow the path westwards.
About 200 m further on, take the track descending to the left. After a few metres, it becomes a clear path that descends gently.
.2 km (782 m), 33 min. Junction of several paths. Take the path descending to the left, now more steeply, towards Leychert.
.2 km (634 m), 47 min. On reaching the track beside some houses on the outskirts of Leychert, turn right and follow it for about 150 m. Then take another track to the right, which climbs towards Charillon.
.6 km (777 m), 1 hr 26 min. Charillon is one of the large farmhouses in the area. Pass alongside it and continue along the main track, which is now much flatter. After 10 minutes, leave the track and take the Lesponne path on the right, climbing through a pleasant beech forest.
.3 km (887 m), 1 hr 58 min. At the path junction, turn left. At the next two junctions, also keep left, descending until you reach the houses of Caraybat.
.3 km (638 m), 2 hr 40 min. Caraybat. Walk through the entire hamlet. At the end of the street, take the path heading north before turning west towards Montgailhard, alternating between woodland and more open sections. Pay close attention, as the route alternates between tracks and paths.
.3 km (574 m), 3 hr 20 min. In a more open area, you will reach a junction of tracks. Continue westwards to a 90-degree bend, where you should leave the track and follow a path beside a building.
.5 km (458 m), 3 hr 39 min. After passing a farmhouse, you will reach the paved secondary road D9A. Turn right and follow it for about two kilometres.
.9 km (435 m), 4 hr 12 min. At the roundabout connecting with the D117 road, follow the road westwards towards Foix for about 600 m. On reaching the first houses, take the path on the left. Cross the railway line and continue along the path on the other side. After crossing an embankment, cross the Ariège River and enter Foix along the river’s left bank. From here, bear in mind that the railway station is on the other side of the river, so you will need to reach the northernmost bridge to cross it. Follow the signs for Foix railway station.
.6 km (384 m), 5 hr 4 min. Foix railway station. End of the stage and of the route.
