It is the river that forms the backbone of the entire valley and which flows until Merenç (Mérens), it is the lifeblood of this region of the French Pyrenees. The river gives its name to the entire department of Ariège, a demarcation whose capital is Foix. The train track and the road follow the course of the river at the bottom of the valley.
