WARNING!

The final section of this stage has been modified due to a property dispute. It is now necessary to descend to Caraybat and Montgailhard.

From Montgailhard, you can take the bus to Foix or take a taxi.

If you choose the walking option, take particular care along the final section, which follows the D17 road. Although it has a wide roadside shoulder, it carries a considerable amount of traffic. Please note that this section is not marked as part of the GR 107, so you will not find any waymarks. The GPS track is available.

Another option is to take a taxi, especially on Sundays and public holidays, when there is no bus service, to travel between Foix railway station and Montgailhard:

Description

0 km (771 m) Directly opposite the gîte d’étape, continue along the street leading to the track that climbs towards the castle and follow it north-west.

0.6 km (810 m), 10 min. Castle junction. After passing a viewpoint overlooking the entire valley, with a panoramic information panel, you will reach the path leading to the castle. If you have time, you can climb up to it and enjoy the magnificent views. The climb takes approximately 10 minutes. To continue, follow the path westwards.

About 200 m farther on, take the track descending to the left. After a few metres, it becomes an open path that descends gently.

2.2 km (783 m), 33 min. Junction with several paths. Take the one descending to the left, now more steeply, towards Leychert.

3.2 km (677 m), 47 min. On reaching the track beside some houses on the outskirts of Leychert, follow it to the right for approximately 150 m. Then take the track on the right that climbs towards Charillon.

5.6 km (775 m), 1 hr 26 min. Charillon

Charillon is one of the large farmsteads in the area. Pass alongside it and continue along the main track, which is now much flatter. After 10 minutes, leave it and take the Lesponne path, which branches off to the right and climbs through a pleasant beech forest.

7.3 km (887 m), 1 hr 58 min. Shortly before reaching a wide track, continue along a path to the left.

9.1 km (800 m), 2 hrs 21 min. At another junction, take the wider path descending to the left. It passes through a mixture of open terrain and woodland before reaching the small village of Caraybat.

10.3 km (638 m), 2 hrs 40 min. Caraybat. In this small hamlet, take the path that begins beyond the last houses and heads north-west. The route alternates between paths and tracks until it reaches the D9A road.

14.5 km (458 m), 3 hrs 42 min. D9A road. Leave the main track and follow the road, crossing the Saint-Genès River. From this point onwards, take care with road traffic.

16.9 km (435 m), 4 hrs 12 min. At the roundabout, join the D117 road and follow it westwards towards Foix. Take particular care with traffic over the next 600 metres, as this road is even busier. After the first houses, take the path on the left, which leads across the Ariège River and into Foix along the left bank of the river.

18.5 km (378 m), 4 hrs 34 min. Cross the Ariège River and enter Foix. To continue to the railway station, head into the town centre and follow the signs towards the northern bridge over the Ariège. Cross the river again; the railway station is then straight ahead.

20.6 km (384 m), 5 hrs 4 min. Foix railway station. End of the stage and the route.
