Stage tracks

from Guils de Cerdanya to Porta

.00 km (1,375 m). Guils de Cerdanya, main square. You leave the town heading east along Malet Street and end up on the Fontanera road. When it turns north (km 0.47) you leave the asphalt and continue NE along a track that, 200 m further on, crosses a watercourse. It is at this point that you also cross the state border and enter France and Alta Cerdanya.

.92 km (1,334 m) 13 min. After a bend to the SW, leave the track and take a path that goes NE and heads towards Sant Pere de Sedret and Cal Romeu (itinerary no. 4 of the local signage). You pass the ruins of what was the nucleus of Sant Pere de Sedret (km 1.15). The farmhouse of Cal Romeu (1.52 km, 1,347 m) and you come out on a track that you follow to the left (NE) for 180 m. When the track describes a sharp bend to the NW, you leave it and take the path that goes down through the shade of the Serra Blanca de la Tor towards the bottom of the Querol valley (signposted as trail no. 2).

.41 km (1,247 m) 32 min. Pla d'Iravals, next to the train line from Tor de Querol to Toulouse. It leads to a track that you take to the left (NW) and walk keeping the train tracks to the right. Further down the valley, the track becomes a path marked as trail no. 6 (3.47 km, 1,273 m) which, in a gentle climb, enters the proud shade of Tremolet. Further on, it turns sharply to the NE, passing the train through an underground passage and, then, the Querol River over a bridge (4.54 km, 1,264 m); on the other side it leads to a track that you follow to the left, turning to the NW.

.98 km (1,268 m) 1 h 10 min. Leave the track that, on the right, leads to the village of Riutés. Turn left (SW), cross the river over a bridge and reach a fork (5.32 km, 1,269 m) where you must turn right (NW) following the track that runs between two rows of poplars. You reach the town of Quers (6.40 km, 1,292 m). On the right, on the other side of the Querol bridge, you can see the N-20 road that goes from La Guingueta to Porta and the Pimorent port and tunnel. Turn left, cross a large quarry and turn N following the track that runs along the bottom of the valley. Turn NE, pass the train and the river, the N-20 main road and exit at the village of Cortvassill.

.60 km (1,349 m) 2 h 5 min. Cortvassill, municipality of Porta. Cross the town along the streets of Isards and La Capella, leaving the slender Romanesque church of Sant Marçal on the right. Continue to the NW following the Hostal Vell path, leaving just off the road (9.00 km, 1,367 m) and, before it turns left (W) to cross the river, leave it to take the track that goes off to the right in a N direction. You reach Querol (km 9.58, 1,373 m); the town, set under the sturdy towers of what was the medieval castle that defended the valley, is on the left, on the other side of the river. Continue straight ahead, passing under the train track (9.98 km, 1,405 m) and coming out onto the main road.

.43 km (1,430 m) 2 h 37 min. N-20 road; turn left to cross the river; immediately after the bridge, leave the asphalt and turn right (NW) along the path that goes into the thick forest of the Salou berry, following the yellow signs of the local trail. With some sudden and steep climbs, you enter the Campcardós valley. The path turns west and ends at the river, which is crossed by a wooden bridge. A few meters further on you come out onto a path.

.60 km (1,730 m) 3 h 40 min. Campcardós Valley Path; confluence with the main route of the Camí dels Bons Homes or GR 107. Turn right and, already descending, head towards Porta.

.60 km (1,511 m) 4 h 10 min. Porta, the last town in Alta Cerdanya before the Pimorent pass; the town is accessed via the underground railway passage. End of the Catalan stages of the Camí dels Bons Homes; from here, the route jumps over the Pimorent pass and enters Occitan lands, arriving in four days at Montsegur and then Foix, passing through Merenç de las Vals (Merens-les-Vals), Acs dels Tèrmes (Ax-les-Termes), Orlú, Montelhó (Montaillou) and Comús. The train line - the station is right next to the town - can serve as a link with Tor de Querol and Puigcerdà.
