The Old Town of Bagà
Want to discover authentically medieval monuments and buildings? We propose an itinerary through the historic center of Bagà, the only town that preserves its medieval urban structure intact; as it was built by Galceran de Pinós around the 13th century. In particular, we recommend you visit:
- The Parish Church of Sant Esteve. A building of great beauty in the Old Town of Bagà and at the same time an example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic art, which was completed in 1339. It consists of three naves, covered with a pointed barrel vault in the center and ribbed vaults in the side naves. The sculpted Gothic portal stands out, which is the most important example of Gothic in the region. Inside, works of art from different periods are preserved: a silver Byzantine cross with Greek inscriptions from the 10th or 11th century, the remains of the old Baroque altar, and neoclassical mural paintings in the chapel of the Santísimo.
- The Galceran Square in Pinós. The urban core of the town in the visit of the Old Nucli of Bagà is clearly differentiated from the old part of the town, built under the Palau dels Pinós and protected by the old walls. In this context, the Plaça Galceran de Pinós or Plaça Porxada stands out for its beauty with buildings of notable antiquity and the entire medieval old town.
- The Palau dels Pinós. The Palau was the stately center of the town and is located at the top of it. Currently, it houses the Medieval and Cathar Centre, where you will find the permanent exhibition on Catharism and the medieval period in the town, as well as other temporary exhibitions and various cultural events. In this space, center of the Ancient Nucle of Bagà, is also located theTourism Office.
- The Shrine of Our Lady of Paller. This emblematic building dates from 1747 and houses the image of the patron saint of Bagà, the Marededéu de Paller. A carving from the 18th century and one of the many Virgin Marys found throughout the country, which has great devotion among the Baganese people. The church has a plant of a single neoclassical nave with a semi-circular vault. The main altarpiece is in the Baroque style and the wall paintings are from the 18th and 19th centuries.
- Sant Joan de l’Avellanet. References to its existence are found in the act of consecration of the monastery of Sant Llorenç prop Bagà, in the year 938. Today, you can see the remains of a single-nave Romanesque church with an almond-shaped vault, topped to the east by a semicircular apse. It is located around the Bastareny River, a place of extraordinary natural beauty. The Portella Tower. A symbol par excellence of medieval Bagà, as it is the only remnant of the old wall that surrounded this town. At the end of the Plaça Porxada and closing the historic center of the town, you will find this watchtower that has become a tourist symbol of Bagà. Leaving from under its arch, you can begin an interesting walk that will take you to another of the town's emblematic places: the Romanesque bridge and the Bastareny river.
- The Romanesque bridge of the Bastareny river. Also known as the town bridge, in medieval style with two arches. The Bastareny River is an important tributary of the Llobregat River. It rises at 1077 meters in the Adou springs, also known as the Bastareny. Bagà's relationship with the river has always been very important. In fact, the town's economic activity was based on the river for a long time.
In addition to these emblematic buildings, walking through the narrow streets and squares of Bagà such as: Cal Solanell, the Plaça de la Verdura, the Pati del Forment, the Plaça de l'Especier, the Plaça del Rescat de les Cent Donzelles, etc., you will enjoy the charm and magic of the medieval era. Come and discover it!
